Cushing Revival2025
PUBLICATIONTYPEFACE DESIGN
Cushing is a rounded, warm serif typeface that feels both historical and approachable, rooted in early 20th-century American print culture. It was revived from a copper alloy type specimen book produced in Boston by Pettingill & Co. in 1901, a time when metal type was still physically cast and carefully engineered for durability and clarity in print.

What makes Cushing distinctive is its softened structure: unlike sharper, more rigid serif faces of the same era, its forms are subtly rounded, giving it a gentler, more inviting tone. The serifs are present but not overly pronounced, and the overall proportions strike a balance between readability and personality.

As a revival, Cushing translates these historical qualities into a contemporary digital context. It preserves the texture and character of early American type design while making it usable for modern applications.
